The taxi trade is a great example of how EVs can become more visible around the city. With the first electric taxi introduced in 2015, Dundee is currently home to one of the largest electric taxi fleets in the UK.
We believe that some policy changes that Dundee City Council enforced were a key driver in this transformation. In September 2016, it was decided that all new private hires must be electric. Furthermore, operators with a licence in their name can apply for a corporate licence if they operate an approved EV. In 2017, it was also enforced that taxi tests for EVs would be 15% cheaper than a non-electric vehicle.
Presently, close to 40% of all taxis in Dundee are electric and this number is expected to grow larger following the introduction of an LEZ zone in Dundee in 2024. Recently, Dundee City Council has approved electric wheelchair-accessible models.
