Clepington Road

Dundee City Council recognises that it is essential that everyone can charge their vehicle easily and is now one step closer to realising that goal with the new rapid charging hub at Clepington Road, which was carefully designed with accessibility in mind before it opened in April 2023. The two-year design process involved engaging with smart and sustainable cities consultancy, Urban Foresight, as well as drivers with a disability, charities, and manufacturers.

The charging hub on Clepington Road, also known as the Fourth Hub or the Charging Oasis, comprises five 50kW rapid and a single 150kW ultra-rapid charging devices, situated across nine parking bays. On the site, drivers with disabilities will find solutions designed to accommodate their needs. Revisions were made to both the design of charge points and to the physical environment surrounding them.

The rapid charging hub at Clepington Road features a combination of various solutions that accommodate easier charging. For Dundee City Council, these major advancements will begin improving accessibility across more sites. Our ambition is to continue to develop more accessible charging infrastructure with various partners and set the standards for accessibility and inclusivity across the country.

A state-of-the-art water filtration system

Besides the accessibility element, the site also offers a rest stop with a drinking water station. This pioneering installation manufactured by Bluewater provides free and purified drinking water for all users. It incorporates a fully integrated rainwater harvesting system to collect rainwater from the solar canopy at the hub and store it in a 5000-litre underground storage tank. The collected rainwater undergoes a range of advanced purification technologies before it is dispensed.

In doing this, we not only limit CO2 emissions, but also help build greater resilience and reduce the demand on the municipality’s water supply. The new Bluewater dispensers – equipped with 55” TV screens for multimedia messaging about topics including sustainability and hydration – provide free purified and chilled drinking water, representing a major step by Dundee to reduce consumption of single-use plastic bottled beverages. EV drivers using the new Clepington Road hub will now be able to fill their own refillable bottles with free purified drinking water on site.

Renewable energy

The public hub on Clepington Road was developed on the same site as the depot for Council electric vehicles. Both sites share the same substation and make up a single renewable energy hub.

The charge points at both the public and depot sites are covered with solar canopies which generate power to fuel charging sessions and ultimately, take pressure off the grid. When the sun is not shining, energy is drawn from the two second-life battery storage units. Each Connected Energy battery storage unit on site can store 100MWh of electricity each year. The systems are being used to capture any excess solar as well as charging from the grid at off-peak times when tariffs are cheaper and electricity is less carbon-intensive.
