The 9th of September marks the 6th anniversary of World EV Day – the biggest e-mobility campaign of the year founded by Ade Thomas and Green.TV - a media company focusing on the topic of sustainability.
This year, the celebration comes with a new refreshed theme - ‘The Better Manifesto’. it’s a confident declaration that electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t just alternatives to petrol and diesel cars. They’re a better choice.
But how are EVs better? Let’s have a look:
More powerful
EVs are more powerful than traditional petrol or diesel cars. Many popular models can go from 0 to 60mph in just 4.4 seconds - quicker than nearly two-thirds of petrol and diesel cars. And thanks to their simpler mechanics (around 20 moving parts compared to over 200 in traditional engines), EVs deliver power instantly and smoothly.
Simpler to drive
All EVs are automatic, so you do not need to think about changing gears. Instead of using a clutch pedal, EV drivers just use the brake and accelerator pedals. And to go forward, reverse, or park, they just press a button. Driving has become simpler than ever.
Smarter steering
Electric Power Steering is a common feature in many modern cars, but in EVs, it adapts to your driving conditions. At low speeds, such as when parking, it’s precise. At high speeds, it becomes more resistant for increased stability. Some models even offer emergency steering assist that scans the road for obstacles, which helps drivers steer safely.
Regenerative braking
EVs use regenerative braking. This is when the electric motor slows the car down and turns the energy into electricity to store in the battery. This gives the car an efficiency boost as well as reduces wear on brakes and tyres as the car doesn’t have to slow down as much.
Less maintenance
Because EVs have fewer parts than petrol and diesel cars, they generally require less maintenance and repairs. With a petrol or diesel engine having so many parts, if even one tiny part fails or breaks, the car may not run correctly or safely.

Quieter
People who have never driven an EV before often ask how it feels in comparison to driving a traditional car. The experience is much quieter and smoother. There is still noise, but it’s at a far lower level than the roar of an engine.
More energy-efficient
EVs are generally about 70% and up to 90% energy-efficient, while even the best diesel engine can reach 40% efficiency. As an electric motor has significantly fewer moving parts, more energy goes to powering the vehicle and less gets wasted.
More environment-friendly
Electric vehicles produce zero exhaust pipe emissions, helping tackle climate change and air pollution. And when powered by renewables like wind or solar, their environmental impact drops even further.

Cleaner air
In densely populated cities like Dundee, where air pollution from traffic is a real concern, switching to EVs can make a big difference. Fewer harmful exhaust gases mean healthier air and better public health.
World EV Day is a chance to celebrate progress within the industry and to look ahead. With ‘The Better Manifesto’, we’re driving real change.
